Octopus Hair! New online workshop!

Octopus Hair Art Nouveau

More mixed media madness from me. I love tossing everything on my table top into an art piece. It’s always so much fun to create layers over layers and see what you end up with. It’s always a surprise to see what comes through in the end. I wish the frame around the girl showed properly though. It’s a bright and shiny gold acrylic actually but that’s so hard to see on a scan. Does anyone have any suggestions for scanning shiny? I haven’t had much luck yet.

I painted Octopus Hair while re-watching the first season of True Detective, hence a bit of a dark mood showing through. What a brilliant show that was, truly. I love the banter between Rust and Marty, so perfect. I had started to watch season two when it first came out but it didn’t quite catch me at the time. I’m going to give it a new whirl over the coming weeks. I’m hoping season three will be as amazing as the first season. I can’t wait to watch it!

I mentioned a couple of weeks back that I’d be creating a new workshop in the fall and I do have some details to share finally. If you’re interested, just sign up for my newsletter and all of the info will come to you in the next few weeks. But for now, here’s a quick overview!

Online Art Workshop, Coming Fall of 2018

Joy & Sorrow: A Moody Mixed Media Exploration

An expressive and insightful journey exploring moody concepts in mixed media art. You will learn how to make your portraits come alive with feeling and emotion; to share the light and to explore the dark. We’ll cover simplifying techniques for facial expression to help you bring a more expressive quality into your art. We’ll explore the world of emotional concepts and how to take that spark of an idea and translate it into a finished piece.

  • Facial Expressions: Creating emotions in your portraits
  • Telling a story with your art: All about concepts and ideas, beyond the portrait
  • Setting a mood with paint and paper
  • Putting it all together: Mixed media mood exploration paintings

Love Joy mixed media and a bit of dark too

Love Joy Mixed Media

I finished this painting this morning and I think it might possibly be the happiest thing I’ve ever painted! I love a good rainbow and as much colour as possible and my mood has been more positive the past few days. It all makes for happy art and happy art is good.  Serendipitously, I found the word LOVE on her shirt in the patterned paper.  I love little things like that.

Below is a new page in one of my art journals. I guess this was a dark mood day? No, no guessing… I know it was. Donald Trump probably did something evil and stupid again while I was painting.  I’m surprised all of my art isn’t dark and black lately.  This one is watercolor and coloured pencil over a book page with lyrics by one of my faves, The Tear Garden.

Sorry for politics in the art blog but if you’re a Donald Trump fan, this might not be the blog for you 🙂

Funky Glasses Mixed Media

Funky Glasses

Hello friends! Are you still melting this summer? I am. I’m a sweaty art mess. I love the sun and the outdoors but I need my AC! Hope the weather in your area is treating you well. We’re almost there though…. I am so ready for my favourite time of the year – FALL! WOO! And with fall comes the best holiday of the year – Halloween. Right? I am really looking forward to Inktober and Drawlloween, the funnest art challenges of the year I think. I hope I can keep up. I’m going to give them both a whirl, even if I only manage a few days.

Mermaid!Mermaid!Above is one of my new originals from this summer in pen and ink (see? already preparing for Inktober, lol) –  funky glasses girl. I know, I have to work on my titles! I love a cool girl in funky glasses. This one has sold already but I’ll probably get some prints made soon. And at right and left are a couple of mermaids in watercolor and ink for a trade. So fun to draw with all of the curves and flowing hair.

In other news, I’m working on a new art workshop. It’s been many years since I’ve taught online but I’m working on a small new program to introduce this coming fall. I don’t have any details yet but will send out information to interested parties in the Fall newsletter, coming in September.

Have a wonderful weekend. xo

Blood Mask, Mixed Media

Blood Mask Mixed Media

Another mixed media piece from me. This one with just about everything thrown in for good measure – watercolors, acrylics, colored pencil, pens, papers, paint pens. It’s all in there. Happily enough, it sold very quickly too, and to a wonderful friend. I hope she enjoys it.

Hope the weather is treating you well – wherever you are. 🙂

A bit of sad art and a joker

I’ve been on a real mixed media path these past few weeks. There’s something about digging out all of the art supplies in the house, spreading them around the art table and then diving in. It’s a good feeling, even when you’re making sad art. This one is called Gremlins for those ugly or sad feelings we all get sometimes. I’ve had a blue few weeks for various reasons and sometimes it helps to paint it out. I don’t usually want to talk about things so this is my therapy. That and a good Mr. Rogers documentary. I went to see Won’t You be My Neighbor last week and it was brilliant. I grew up on Mr. Rogers and loved the man as a young kid. Of course I thought he was super hokey the older I got and I didn’t realize how incredibly cool he actually was until I was much older – an adult. The documentary was wonderful and I think everyone in the audience cried a little at the end. I know I did. Well worth seeing this super feel-good movie.

Below are a couple of artist trading cards made for a trading partner on Instagram. I seriously disliked Suicide Squad, the movie, but I always liked Harley Quinn. She’s so fun to draw! Not sure what she sees in the Joker though. These ones were made in marker and inks on Bristol board.

Harley Quinn & Joker

I filmed an art walk through today! WOO! My first video in years. I used to teach online art workshops a few moons ago but it’s been a long time. I’m so rusty and awkward. I’ll have the video edited to add to a new website section soon.

Can I get an eyeroll?

Can I get an eyeroll?

As you may have noticed, I’ve been busy changing things up on my website! Yay for more color! I’d love to focus more on my mixed media art and less on my watercolor graphic sets so an overhaul was much needed. I’ll still be creating and selling my sets on all of the main graphic designer sites but I’m going to focus mainly on my own art here on the blog. And add some videos too! I used to offer online workshops many years ago through Art Trader Magazine so I’m definitely going to be rusty but I’m looking forward to putting up some video tutorials and walk-throughs occasionally.

My husband, the zombie
Above is a new pen and ink mixed media piece. I am seriously loving the pen and ink these days! Especially mixing it all up with watercolors, washi tape, stencils and acrylics. These are the sort of things that get an art supply junkie really going! One day I will have to share photos of my washi tape collection. Or maybe not. It could be embarrassing.

In just one short month and a half, we will he heading off to a comic convention and I need a costume or two. At left is my husband and he makes a really good zombie so I was thinking of zombie family for the three of us (my daughter is joining us). But that’s sort of more Halloweeny I think. Ideally I’d like to make a father / daughter costume set. Last year my hubby was old Luke Skywalker and my daughter was Rey. This year they thought of being Odin and Loki. Any suggestions?

Happy weekend! I would normally be watching the World Cup but I wanted a Belgium and England final. Boo.

Art for Sale – Portraits in pen and ink!

A pretty Frida

I’ve been so in love with pen and ink recently. I’ve been on an absolute binge of art making with my microns, paint pens and some watercolors. I love to draw portraits in pen and I love a ton of colour so it’s a fun mix for me. I have about 20 or 30 of these portraits available (humans and animals) and will be getting them up on my websites over the next week or two. If you’re interested in the original or a print of either of these pieces, send me a note!

Is anyone else sweltering in this heat? I’m hoping tomorrow brings some relief for all of us. I know  a heat wave has hit much of North America and Europe too. I melt in humidity. My default is a cool autumn and spring, LOL. But I have been having a great time up at the cottage. There is cool water to dip into, boats to tour around in and cold wines to drink. These little things make everything good again.

Crystal Hearts & Cool Stencils

Crystal Heart Bleeding

I’ve been making stencil and background art lately and it’s been great fun! I even broke out the gelli plate last weekend! Quite the work out making gelli prints, lol. Anyway, above is a piece made using Strumpet Stencils’ Crystal Heart stencil. I think this stencil is one of my faves. I love a good crystal. Ok… I know it’s a little dark and weird but I like weird. If you’re interested, there is a full tutorial and walk-through over on the Strumpet Stencils blog. This one is for sale too. If you’re interested, send me a note!

What do you do with a Guy Fawkes stencil? You become an art rebel of course. My Rebel poster features the Strumpet Stencil Guy Fawkes stencil as well as some of the symbol stencils. And again, there’s a full tutorial and pictorial walk-through on the stencil blog. I always loved V for Vendetta so this stencil made me super happy. I’ll be using this one in more artwork for sure!

Butterflies & Tomatoes

Butterfly Girl

The weather is pretty weird lately. I’m in Canada and normally at this time of the year, it’s starting to chill quite a bit. But this year we had a crazy warm hot spell at the end of September and my tomato plants have re-blossomed! It’s way too late in the season for them to develop into fruit but it was a valiant effort. Makes me sad too – hot weather this late in the year. On the brighter side, my fall gardening is mostly done now. I only have to rake… like 50 times. I am surrounded by trees.

Above is a mixed media piece from my new art journal. I was feeling the warm autumn colours and wanted to go with something cheerful and fun before the snow starts. Winter is coming. OMG. I had to say that. It’s my GoT addiction showing. I’ll work on a few snow ladies soon. I’m ready for the white stuff to appear!

I’m going to have a whole new set of prints soon for my art store. And a new batch of original ACEOs and probably some postcard sized art too. I’ll be uploading and announcing some sales over the coming month or two!

Soooooo exciting!!! New ACEOs for sale

This oddball little mixed media guy is one of the new ACEOs I made for my Etsy art shop. He’s very excited about something but I’m not sure what. Maybe his upcoming coronation for the Kingdom of Lowbrowville or maybe he’s a fantasy foodie freaking out about the latest animal parts burger (that would be my son). I only wish I could get this excited about something; so excited that my face is bursting and I can’t hold it in any longer. Kids do it all the time but we adults tend to be more calm about fun things don’t we? There are exceptions though, like my husband. He really has faces like this at Christmas and on his birthday. It’s ridiculously funny.

It’s Friday tomorrow which means it’s pub night! Woo! Sadly, I can’t have beer right now due to the carb content but I think I can content myself with a vodka and soda with a slice of lime. The things we have to do to be healthy.

Enjoy your weekend!
