Blood Mask, Mixed Media

Blood Mask Mixed Media

Another mixed media piece from me. This one with just about everything thrown in for good measure – watercolors, acrylics, colored pencil, pens, papers, paint pens. It’s all in there. Happily enough, it sold very quickly too, and to a wonderful friend. I hope she enjoys it.

Hope the weather is treating you well – wherever you are. 🙂

Joy & Love Mantra: Strumpet Stencils Walk-Through

Strumpet Stencils Design Team

Strumpet Stencils Used:

The Strumpet Stencil design team is doing a fun project this summer – round robin journals! Woo! I received Nolwenn’s lovely journal a couple of weeks ago and decided to use it for this month’s walk-through. Nolwenn had already stenciled some awesome backgrounds onto her journal pages and I wanted to keep the shape theme. She used the mini moley triangle stencil as you can see in the first image below and I plonked my pencil drawing over top.

I used watercolors for the next step because I wanted Nolwenn’s background art to show through the skin and hair tones so it was just a light wash here. To give the face depth, I used Copic markers over top for the shadows and highlights. Any regular markers will be fine because they’re not super opaque for the most part over top of acrylics.

To create the background, I used a watered down acrylic wash in pink and yellow so Nolwenn’s background could still peek out from behind. Once I added the crop circle stencil, I used another light pink wash over top to blend it in with the background. Washi tape on top! I love that stuff. And a few more mini moley stencils with the crosses or plus signs – however you see it.

I used Posca Paint Pens for the lettering. I seriously LOVE these pens. They’re pretty brilliant and will paint over top of most surfaces. They’re fabulous for painting over acrylics. I also used the Posca Paint Pens for the facial outlines and the little circles I added to the background. I sprayed with a fixative and then used regular ink pens for facial features.

Nowenn’s journal theme was Mantras and I don’t really have one. But I do like these words a lot.

Can I get an eyeroll?

As you may have noticed, I’ve been busy changing things up on my website! Yay for more color! I’d love to focus more on my mixed media art and less on my watercolor graphic sets so an overhaul was much needed. I’ll still be creating and selling my sets on all of the main graphic designer sites but I’m going to focus mainly on my own art here on the blog. And add some videos too! I used to offer online workshops many years ago through Art Trader Magazine so I’m definitely going to be rusty but I’m looking forward to putting up some video tutorials and walk-throughs occasionally.

My husband, the zombie
Above is a new pen and ink mixed media piece. I am seriously loving the pen and ink these days! Especially mixing it all up with watercolors, washi tape, stencils and acrylics. These are the sort of things that get an art supply junkie really going! One day I will have to share photos of my washi tape collection. Or maybe not. It could be embarrassing.

In just one short month and a half, we will he heading off to a comic convention and I need a costume or two. At left is my husband and he makes a really good zombie so I was thinking of zombie family for the three of us (my daughter is joining us). But that’s sort of more Halloweeny I think. Ideally I’d like to make a father / daughter costume set. Last year my hubby was old Luke Skywalker and my daughter was Rey. This year they thought of being Odin and Loki. Any suggestions?

Happy weekend! I would normally be watching the World Cup but I wanted a Belgium and England final. Boo.

Crystal Hearts & Cool Stencils

Crystal Heart Bleeding

I’ve been making stencil and background art lately and it’s been great fun! I even broke out the gelli plate last weekend! Quite the work out making gelli prints, lol. Anyway, above is a piece made using Strumpet Stencils’ Crystal Heart stencil. I think this stencil is one of my faves. I love a good crystal. Ok… I know it’s a little dark and weird but I like weird. If you’re interested, there is a full tutorial and walk-through over on the Strumpet Stencils blog. This one is for sale too. If you’re interested, send me a note!

REBEL

What do you do with a Guy Fawkes stencil? You become an art rebel of course. My Rebel poster features the Strumpet Stencil Guy Fawkes stencil as well as some of the symbol stencils. And again, there’s a full tutorial and pictorial walk-through on the stencil blog. I always loved V for Vendetta so this stencil made me super happy. I’ll be using this one in more artwork for sure!

Spring Flower Girl in Mixed Media

Mixed Media Spring Flower Girl

Happy spring? I wish! It’s snowing here today and spring is on Tuesday. Grrrrrr. But in honour of the upcoming spring, I painted a pretty flower girl. I am anticipating the warm weather, spring rains and my garden. I can’t wait to get back to it. The girl above is painted in watercolours with coloured pencils over top. I used plenty of collage flower elements as well except the flowers I used I actually painted too. They’re all from my various clipart sets. I used acrylics and markers for the big flowers over top. Lots of media in this one! It’s for sale too. Send me a note if you’re interested. It’s 9″ x 12″ on watercolour paper.

I won’t be bikini ready (OMG, that will never EVER happen again) but I’m doing another fast this week and am hungry in my mind, lol. I know I’m not actually hungry. I switched to a ketogenic diet just over a year ago for health reasons and had been intermittent fasting as well but I hit a plateau over Christmas and stayed at the same weight for about three months. I thought I’d shake things up this month and add in fasting days again and it has totally dislodged that plateau. WOO! I don’t ever get hungry eating keto so it’s super easy to fast but overcoming the mind tricks is another thing.  My mind wants a big spinach salad loaded with cheese but my tummy is like, “meh, I can wait.” I love keto. Seriously. Best thing I ever did for my health.

I have a lot of art on the go this weekend so hope to fill the blog with new stuff over the next few weeks. Hope you all have a happy weekend!

Stuff you put in art journals

Underwear

I’m not much of a writer as my regular visitors will know. It’s usually a struggle to put together enough words for a blog post so you can imagine my distress when it comes to writing stuff in an art journal. I’m not exactly big on pouring my inner thoughts on a page either and this is usually why my art journals are mostly filled with pictures rather than pretty words and quotes. I just like to draw and an art journal is more like a bigger, better sketchbook to me than a diary. The text above isn’t even part of the journal image above. I added it in Photoshop. Maybe I’ll call it an enhanced painting book from now on rather than a journal. Anyway, here’s to lonely socks! This post is dedicated to them.

More journal art! This time with a few words! The art comes from the wonderful Moonshine program with Effy Wild. Lots of pagan, witchy art stuff if that’s your thing. If not, it’s a super fun course anyway. Effy is such a great teacher of technique and a wonderful source of art supply knowledge.

Hope the weather is being kind to everyone! Spring is almost here! Sort of!

RBG and a bunch of other art!

Ruth Bader Ginsberg Mixed Media Art

RBG, you have to love her. Except if you’re a republican… probably. LOL. Maybe most people find her as wonderful as I do? I love her even though I’m Canadian. This is the notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg, mixed media style. I’ve been painting an awful lot lately but most of it has been sent off to friends for Santa gifts and can’t be shown here yet. And I still have some more Santa paintings to make and the odd trade or two still happening. Thankfully, business is quiet this December and I’m just happy to plod along and paint things.

This weekend is another Art-A-Thon over at IllustratedATCs.com so I’ve been drawing and colouring batches of ATCsn to trade. If you’re a member, please come by and trade with me! Here are some of the cards I’ve done for it.

ATCs for trade

The Art Bundle for Good is here! Have you signed up for this yet? I think there are only two days left! It is truly amazing! Please, please check it out and don’t miss it! There are about 75 online courses and a batch of PDF art books. Well worth the money and the best thing is that 25% of the proceeds go to charity. I’ve signed up and can confirm it’s a fabulous deal filled with awesome things for all artists and styles.

Happy weekend !

Empathy Monsters with real feelings

Empathy Monsters Art

I’m still on the Life Book 2017 thing! Surprisingly, since usually after about 3 or 4 weeks of a workshop, I move on to something else. Above are a set of empathy monsters meant to be sent to a swap partner to give them positive messages. It’s a cute idea. I made one for myself and one was sent to Texas. I haven’t received mine yet but I’m looking forward to it! Life Book is filled with lots of art therapy type of lessons and to be honest, I’m beginning to find it a bit overwhelming. I’m more of a “show me the technique” type of learner than I am a “feelings” type of learner though I can see why the program is so appealing for so many. It’s very positive. I just like the nitty gritty.  How do you like to learn? Are you art therapy or art techniques or both? Or something else?

Below is art from my sketchbook, a challenge from my 11 year old daughter. She asked if I could draw a lazy, fat cat with a t-shirt on and the t-shirt had to have cat puns on it. Challenge met!

Instagram user? Please let me know your instagram name! I know I follow a few of you already but I love to see daily art and I love instagram. You can find me as SLSLines.

Watercolor illustrations & mixed media

Pencil and watercolor flower garden

I’ve really been enjoying mixed media art over the past couple of weeks. I signed up (super late, I know) for Life Book 2017 a week or two back and all of the wonderful videos have totally inspired me to get working on new canvas art. I’ll be posting a lot more soon! I also bought a smaller 5.5″ x 8″ mixed media sketchbook from Strathmore and wow, do I ever love this thing! It’s a softcover book so really easy to bend back the cover for double page spreads and the paper is high quality and thick. I love it. I’ve been working in it for the past couple of nights, having lots of watercolor and mixed media fun.

Anyone else in Life Book 2017? It’s my first time taking an online course like this and all of the woo is a little weird for me but it’s such a positive experience and I’m really enjoying it. I wish the course was in person though. It’s much more fun to create in a group with art friends, right? If you’re in my local area, let me know! I’m in K-W. Maybe we can art together 🙂
