Joy & Love Mantra: Strumpet Stencils Walk-Through

Strumpet Stencils Design Team

Strumpet Stencils Used:

The Strumpet Stencil design team is doing a fun project this summer – round robin journals! Woo! I received Nolwenn’s lovely journal a couple of weeks ago and decided to use it for this month’s walk-through. Nolwenn had already stenciled some awesome backgrounds onto her journal pages and I wanted to keep the shape theme. She used the mini moley triangle stencil as you can see in the first image below and I plonked my pencil drawing over top.

I used watercolors for the next step because I wanted Nolwenn’s background art to show through the skin and hair tones so it was just a light wash here. To give the face depth, I used Copic markers over top for the shadows and highlights. Any regular markers will be fine because they’re not super opaque for the most part over top of acrylics.

To create the background, I used a watered down acrylic wash in pink and yellow so Nolwenn’s background could still peek out from behind. Once I added the crop circle stencil, I used another light pink wash over top to blend it in with the background. Washi tape on top! I love that stuff. And a few more mini moley stencils with the crosses or plus signs – however you see it.

I used Posca Paint Pens for the lettering. I seriously LOVE these pens. They’re pretty brilliant and will paint over top of most surfaces. They’re fabulous for painting over acrylics. I also used the Posca Paint Pens for the facial outlines and the little circles I added to the background. I sprayed with a fixative and then used regular ink pens for facial features.

Nowenn’s journal theme was Mantras and I don’t really have one. But I do like these words a lot.

Gelli plated journal art

I’m happy! I’m working on a round robin journal with some of my art friends. I love doing these – collecting cool art from fellow artists around the world, all in one pretty canvas wrapped mini journal. I just sent mine off to the US and can’t wait to see it back again after it travels all over North America and the UK. Should be interesting. I did a spread in my own journal before sending it off using cool stencils from Strumpet Stencils again. And there’s a walk through for this one if you’re interested: Take no Shit walk-through.

It’s been a busy week for me. I’ve been working on tons of paintings and drawings to put up for sale. I don’t have any scanned to show yet but they’ll start popping up next week and will be added for sale here, with prints too!

Happy weekend and art making 🙂

Gelli Plating Madness

Gelli Journal Pages

I spent last Saturday afternoon making gelli plate journal pages with a friend. Wine was involved which made things even more fun. But it was quite the workout! I work in my loft which is the third floor of the house so the air conditioning never makes it up here. It was over 30 degrees and we had the fan out but it was a sweaty business with all of the rolling and pushing and painting. Who knew that art was exercise too!? These pages were made for a round robin journal I’m participating in with some art friends. I’ll show it off once it returns home to me.

Blue faces with found poetry

Above are a set of found poetry ATCs on their way to a new home across the ocean. I love found poetry. My found poems are usually ridiculous and rude. It can be so silly and fun though these ones were a bit more serious. You never know a stranger’s sense of humor so best to keep it banal and light. These are watercolor and marker on some sort of weird paper I found in my drawer. It was almost like linen. Very strange to work on.

Happy weekend to everyone! I hope yours is warm and fun 🙂

Crystal Hearts & Cool Stencils

Crystal Heart Bleeding

I’ve been making stencil and background art lately and it’s been great fun! I even broke out the gelli plate last weekend! Quite the work out making gelli prints, lol. Anyway, above is a piece made using Strumpet Stencils’ Crystal Heart stencil. I think this stencil is one of my faves. I love a good crystal. Ok… I know it’s a little dark and weird but I like weird. If you’re interested, there is a full tutorial and walk-through over on the Strumpet Stencils blog. This one is for sale too. If you’re interested, send me a note!

REBEL

What do you do with a Guy Fawkes stencil? You become an art rebel of course. My Rebel poster features the Strumpet Stencil Guy Fawkes stencil as well as some of the symbol stencils. And again, there’s a full tutorial and pictorial walk-through on the stencil blog. I always loved V for Vendetta so this stencil made me super happy. I’ll be using this one in more artwork for sure!
